10 must-watch movies for aspiring fashion designers

Yves Saint Laurent (2014) - This French movie is a must-watch to understand the struggles behind upholding a fashion house and the work that goes into it. There is another movie about the peaks of his career between 1967 - 1976 called Saint Laurent.

Coco before Chanel - Do you want to know what made Chanel reach its position today? This movie is about the rise of Coco Chanel from humble beginnings to the astounding heights she reached. The life story of legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel. Another movie about the same - Coco Chanel.

The Dressmaker (2015) - A woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. Sewing machine and a great Haute couture style, she transforms the women beyond their imagination. The movies shows what wonders a woman can do in the fashion world.

Phantom Thread (2017) - This movie portrays the couture fashion world of London in the 1950’s. It provides a nice understanding of couture fashion back then.

The devil wears Prada - This movie paints a wonderful picture of life of fashion journalists and the ruthlessness of the fashion world. It shows how fashion magazines run and the different events involved.

Valentino: The Last Emperor - Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani in 2007, announced his retirement and was working for his final show. This documentary depicts Valentino during the last two years of his time as a designer and what work he put up in his final show.

Dior and I - This documentary shows what really happens back there. A great portrayal of what goes on inside the famous, bewitching and a busy Christian Dior fashion house.

The September Issue - R J Cutler’s documentary a renowned editor of `Vogue’. This movie shows her journey through preparing the September 2007 issue. Weighing in at a record 840 pages, it is also the magazine’s most important issue, announcing the autumn fashion collections.

Bill Cunningham New York - Bill Cunningham, of the New York Times. He’s also an irreplaceable and extraordinary chronicler of fashion. The documentary shows his tireless efforts in snapping photos of and writing about interestingly attired celebrities and everyday New Yorkers. In a way he defined street style fashion.

The First Monday in May - This movie shows a one year-long journey of preparing for the Chinese-inspired fashion exhibit China: Through the Looking Glass. The exhibit featured 150 garments from 40 designers. Examination of this exhibit is what this documentary is about.
